The Checkerdome started out its life as the Arena, a mammoth venue that was home to the St. Louis Blues and host to a variety of events, In 1977, Ralston Purina bought the building and the Blues and renamed it the Checkerdome. This arrangement lasted until 1983 when it went back to being the Arena.
